We made them for ourselves and none of us ever thought they’d get to play before an audience. We had to make films that way. That’s the advantage and disadvantage of having grown up with John: he always made films for himself. He had to like it and have an interest in it. He’d write something, be in love with it and talk about it with everybody: the guy who delivered the groceries, the guy that delivered the water, people walking in the streets.
